National Data Repository

The NDR offers a flexible approach to data management so that you can choose a solution that suits you best. Leave your data in the hands of experienced professionals or manage it yourself. Collections can be added to, catalogued, viewed, searched and sorted via the Internet.

Data preserved in the National Data Repository (NDR) is kept secure and automatically migrated to new media and file formats as required, relieving you of the worry of maintaining data reliability.

Protecting digital information is about more than simply keeping bits safe. Organisations increasingly need to be confident that information is accessible and understandable 5, 20 or 100 years from now. They need to be reassured that information they create now can still be accessed in the future, despite changes in computer media, operating systems and the applications that run on them.

The National Data Repository (NDR) is one of range of services that ULCC's Digital Archives group offers to help safeguard valuable information for current and future generations. We can ensure that your digital files are protected against loss due to media failure or accidental or malicious tampering. We can preserve access to your information by ensuring that it is stored in a form which is immune to changes in software applications and file formats. And when it is necessary to convert the format in which your files are stored, we can do this for you automatically, or we can simply advise you when it is required and allow you to make the decision as to what to do.

We can help you ensure that your information is stored with adequate metadata to allow you, your successors and your clients to understand it and reuse it. Metadata performs the same function as a library catalogue, or the labels on a filing cabinet. It helps us find what we are looking for, and once we have found it, to be confident of what it is and how to interpret it.

We can protect your information against access by anyone, or we can help you use the web to promote its use by a select community or the general public.

We have kept scientific research data collections accessible over periods of 20 years, during which time the computers used to process them and the media used to store the information changed at least 4 times. We provided secure off-site storage for the unique collections of the UK Social Science Data Archive whilst they designed and commissioned their own off-site facilities. We help organisations such as The National Archives, The British Library and Ordnance Survey ensure that digital information which forms part of the national memory will survive for future generations.
