ULCC hosts 1 million Moodle students
Number of Shared Services users grows by 30% year-on-year and continues to catch the attention of large HE institutions
London, UK, 8 October 2011: The University of London Computer Centre (ULCC) today welcomed its 1 millionth registered Moodle user; further establishing its position as the largest provider of managed and supported virtual learning environments in the UK education sector.
Chris Cobb, Chief Operating Officer of the University of London said “The University is at the forefront in the development of shared services and is very proud of ULCC’s success in supporting a growing community of Moodle users.”
Originally developed with a focus on FE institutions, the Hosted Moodle service now serves a growing number of HE customers; with Birkbeck, Institute of Education, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Royal Veterinary College and School of Oriental and African Studies being the latest additions.
Moodle’s growing popularity
By combining a focus on pedagogy with the freedom to adapt that is offered by open source software, Moodle has quickly become the VLE of choice for educators across all sectors.
According to the official Moodle statistics it is now used by nearly 46 million users in 211 countries. The UK currently comes fourth - after the US, Spain and Brazil - in the international “league table” with close to 3,500 registered Moodle sites.
ULCC’s Moodle Developments
Part of Moodle’s appeal, compared to other proprietary solutions, is its user community which actively drives developments. ULCC development of the e-ILP plug-in, an electronic Individual Learning Plan that helps students take ownership of their learning, is but one example of how common needs can lead to a shared solution. This plug-in has now been translated into six languages and averages around 200 daily downloads.
ULCC has worked continuously to offer seamless integration between institutional VLEs and other core IT services and de-veloped a range of solutions for on-line assessment.
ULCC provides services to the education sector in the widest sense, An important recent development is an integrated VLE, e-portfolio, website and CRM solution de-livered to two health sector organisations to support staff development.
Most recently ULCC became an ALT Sponsoring Member. “We are very pleased that ULCC has joined ALT as a Sponsoring Member. Given our complementary constituencies and focus we are exploring how we can work together on joint activities, including workshops, during 2012” said Seb Schmoller, Chief Executive, ALT
Future gazing
Richard Maccabee, Director of ULCC, is clear that growth of this service is central to his plans: “The VLE is an increasingly important system for many organisations – not just those primarily engaged in education – and Moodle continues to attract users. We are growing our capability to support Moodle, investing in more staff and adding additional services that complement Moodle, to provide a fully fledged learning environment.’
